Palworld is out of early access. Version 1.0 landed July 10 as update 1.100.427, two and a half years after the January 2024 launch that briefly made "Pokemon with guns" the biggest game on the planet. It's a free update, it shipped simultaneously on Steam, PS5, Xbox, and Game Pass, and Pocketpair didn't raise the price.
The patch notes run 27 pages and over 10,000 words, close enough to Steam's character limit that the studio joked about it. Their own description of the result: essentially a new game. Having read the notes, that's not far off.
The headline numbers
| What | Early access | 1.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Total Pals | 215 | 287 (72 new) |
| Level cap | 65 | 80 |
| Regions | Palpagos Islands + expansions | + Sunreach and the World Tree |
| New weapons | 13 |
The World Tree is the one to pay attention to. It's been sitting on the horizon since day one of early access as the game's most visible unreachable landmark, and 1.0 finally makes it a destination with the story overhaul built around it.
The two new systems that change the grind
Awakening lets you push individual Pals past their previous limits, a post-cap progression sink for the ones you've already invested in. Mutation adds a rare breeding outcome that can produce exceptionally powerful offspring, which turns the breeding pens, already the real endgame for most players, into a slot machine with better prizes.
Together they're a retention play aimed at the thousand-hour players, and paired with the level cap raise, all the high-end content got rebalanced to match: raid bosses, Tower Boss Hard Mode, and the oil rigs are tuned around level 80 now.
[!WARNING] If you're returning after a year away with a maxed character, your old endgame builds are calibrated for content that no longer exists in that form. Expect the rebalanced oil rigs and hard mode towers to hit noticeably harder than you remember.
The other quality-of-life star is the Wing Pack, a glider that burns Wing Cells for free flight without using a Pal. Functionally it means your full five-Pal combat team stays ready while you traverse, which fixes one of the oldest friction points in the game: sacrificing a team slot to a flying mount.
Base players get a reworked raid system, and the multiplayer stack picked up a long list of improvements. The full notes are worth skimming; Insider Gaming has a good breakdown, and Massively Overpowered covered the launch.
The bigger story: early access done right
Palworld sold tens of millions of copies in early access, survived a Nintendo patent lawsuit filed mid-development, kept shipping large free updates on a steady cadence, and exited early access without a price hike or a paid expansion split. That sequence is rare enough to be notable.
The contrast with the AAA cost spiral writes itself: a studio of Pocketpair's size turned a chaotic viral hit into a maintained platform by shipping continuously and charging nothing extra for the destination. The 1.0 label arrives with the game's reputation stronger than its launch-week memes, which is the opposite of how these stories usually go.
If you bought it in 2024, played forty hours, and shelved it: this is the update worth reinstalling for. Everything you have carries forward, the island you knew is bigger, and the tree on the horizon finally lets you in.
