The gap this fills is small and real: you need somewhere to put text for a few minutes. Opening a word processor is slow and creates a file you will have to name and later delete. This is a text area that is already open.

There is no account, no sync, and no server-side copy. Your text stays in the browser, which is the right trade for a scratch pad and the wrong one for anything you cannot afford to lose. Download what matters before closing the tab.

Stripping formatting is the most common use. Text copied from a web page or a document carries styling, fonts, and colours that follow it into the next application. Passing it through a plain editor removes all of that.

It also works as a staging area for writing that will end up somewhere else: a commit message, a support reply, a post you want to read once more before sending. Formatting, lists, and line numbering are there when structure helps, and ignorable when it does not.

Upload and download let you open a text file, change it, and save it back without installing anything, which is occasionally the fastest way to edit a config file on a machine that is not yours.
