WebP is the sensible default for anything going on the web. It typically lands 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPEG of comparable quality, and every browser still receiving security updates supports it.

JPEG remains the safest choice when the file has to be opened by something old or unpredictable: an email client, a print shop, a legacy CMS. It has no transparency, so anything with an alpha channel gets a solid background.

PNG is lossless, which means it is the right answer for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and anything with sharp edges or flat colour, and the wrong answer for photographs. A photograph saved as PNG is often several times larger than the same image as a high-quality JPEG with no visible benefit.

Quality is not a percentage of visual fidelity, it is a knob on how aggressively detail is discarded. The range from 75 to 85 is where most images sit: below 70 you start seeing blocking around edges and banding in gradients, above 90 the file grows quickly for differences almost nobody can see.

Resizing usually saves more than compression does. An image displayed 800 pixels wide gains nothing from being 4000 pixels wide, and the dimensions are multiplied together, so halving the width and height cuts the pixel count to a quarter before any compression is applied.

Recompressing an already-compressed image degrades it further, because the artefacts from the first pass get treated as detail worth preserving in the second. Always start from the highest-quality original you have.

Compression runs on a canvas element in your own browser. The image is never uploaded, which matters for screenshots containing customer data, documents, or anything else you would not paste into a stranger's web form.
